Dior "Y" Dress: How Many Folds in that Bow

Updated: Aug 30, 2020

This dress is exciting purely for the fact it has a famous sister in a famous photograph. The sister is similar in all ways but one. The frustrating bow! I've had quite the challenge of trying to find some kind of clear picture of the velvet bow at the waist of this design that hides in the shadows of the museum photograph. And much to my dismay, the famous photographed dress has a white taffeta bow!

The excerpt from the museum says that the shaping of the bust and the sleeves is not by an inner system but by the fabric shaping. That made me feel like duchesse satin is the best bet for the body of the dress but I still need to figure out the seam work of the dress.

Closeups and digital enhancing the picture helps me get a better idea of the shaping of this dress but actually draping on the form will be the best indicator. I will also need to get plenty of velvet trim. I'm hoping that once this piece is complete that I can recreate this famous picture somehow, maybe with two dogs on the sides. My talented photographer and best friend will help with all the marvelous final photoshoots.
